BOR FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES / NUTRITION AND DIETETICS / BES2008 - NUTRITIONAL BIOCHEMISTRY II

Learning Outcomes Of the Course
Describes hormone classifications and their mechanisms of action
Discusses the effects of insulin, glucagon, glucocorticoids, adrenal medullary hormones and growth hormone on nutrient metabolism
Analyses the biochemical functions of thyroid and gonadal hormones
Explains the regulation of fasting and satiety metabolism, metabolic changes during rest and exercise
Discusses how water and electrolyte balance are regulated in the body and how this balance is controlled by hormones
Evaluates the biochemical basis of acid-base homeostasis and the regulatory mechanisms in metabolism
Explains the biochemical role of macro minerals such as calcium, phosphate, magnesium and their balance in bone metabolism
Explains the biochemical structure of bone tissue and the relationship between parathyroid hormone, calcitonin and vitamin D
Discusses the biochemical basis and clinical symptoms of iron deficiency, and suggests dietary strategies based on factors affecting iron absorption
Discusses the biochemical properties of fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins and their utilisation in metabolism
