Course Objective
To examine the spread of Islam outside the Arabian Peninsula from the birth of Islam in the light of historical sources; to evaluate the political, social, economic and cultural factors affecting this process and to comprehend the settlement patterns of Islam in different geographies.
Brief Content of the Course
This course focuses on the spread of Islam outside Mecca, outside the Arabian Peninsula and to different continents during the Four Caliphs, Umayyad and Abbasid periods starting from the time of Prophet Muhammad. The processes of expansion to regions such as North Africa, Andalusia, Central Asia, Anatolia and the Indian Subcontinent are discussed in the context of political conquests, trade routes, Sufi movements and missionary activities.
