Course Objective
Learning general Turkish Folk Music information (genres, forms, styles). Starting with simple and easy melodies, singing folk songs in conjunction with the modes, both verbally and without words.
Brief Content of the Course
The basic philosophy and elements that constitute Turkish Folk Music; the definition and formation of Turkish Folk Music; the place of Turkish Folk Music in our tradition and culture, its cultural transmission; basic concepts in Turkish folk music (broken airs, long airs, mixed rhythm melodies, folk songs, etc.); the concept of usul (simple, combined and mixed usuls); the pitch system (makam-scale) and intervals of Turkish folk music; progression, deciphering and solfege in simple makam-scales; dictation studies with different usul features appropriate to the level in simple makam-scales and the ability to create melodies.
